Welcome to First United Methodist Church in Gulfport, Mississippi. Our congregation has been in ministry for over 110 years on the Mississippi gulf coast. We celebrate our past, building on the incredible heritage of those who have been in ministry before us, but we don’t live in the past. God’s future for us is exciting and challenging. Join us on the journey toward the heart of Christ.
Our sanctuary, built in the 1910s, is a beautiful place of worship that has stood through major storms along the Gulf Coast with relatively minor damage. The rosette in our banner above is at the center the STAINED GLASS DOME that covers our worship space.
Today, we are in ministry throughout our community, along the coast, and around the world.
Everyone who follows Jesus Christ is a minister. It is just who he calls us to be.
But we have set apart some folks for particular forms of ministry in the Church. Get to know the Staff of First UMC by clicking the Staff link to the right.
Our History – a synopsis
When the city of Gulfport was founded in the late 1800s, the people called Methodists were among the first to hold worship services. From then until now, we continue to believe that we are called to be in the midst of the city, at the heart of its spiritual, civic, and cultural life.
Our historic building with its magnificent stained glass dome has withstood major hurricanes and is now one of the oldest houses of worship within site of the Gulf between the bays of St. Louis and Biloxi.
Our Church – gifted and faithful people — are committed to ministry in downtown Gulfport.
